Pokémon Arena 2D Combat Mechanics

A breakdown of how Big Kid Nation reimagines Pokémon battles as a high-speed, physics-based 2D fighting arena.

1. Directional Normals & Specials

Every Pokémon possesses Light and Heavy normal strikes that can be modified with directional inputs (Neutral, Forward, Up, Down). Specials work similarly: combining the Special button with directional inputs unleashes signatures like Pikachu’s Thunderbolt, Charizard’s Flamethrower, or Blastoise’s Hydro Pump.

2. Stamina, Blocking & Air-Dashes

Defensive maneuvers are governed by the Stamina Bar. Holding Guard blocks incoming hits but depletes stamina. Tapping Guard at the exact frame of impact performs a Parry, leaving the attacker briefly vulnerable. Air-dashing allows fighters to reposition quickly or extend aerial juggles.

3. Super Gauge & Comeback Mechanics

Dealing and taking damage fills the Super Gauge. Once maxed, players can activate cinematic moves that deal massive shield damage or finish opponents across the screen. Certain Pokémon like Lucario deal increased damage and gain expanded hitboxes when at low health.
